About Us

Tree Africa is a small UK charity that was set up to fundraise and support the work of southern African NGO Environment Africa (formerly Environment 2000).

Our founding staff and trustees witnessed first hand the impact its work was having on vulnerable communities and their environment, and wanted to help this leading local NGO to replicate its success across the region.

Environment Africa has grown into one of the region’s most innovative and effective action and advocacy groups. It has 20 years experience and is one of the only local NGOs in Zimbabwe to have received direct funding from DFID following a governance and finance audit in 2006.

Where we work

Malawi, Zambia and Zimbabwe and soon in Mozambique.

Staff, trustees & volunteers

Tree Africa receives pro bono professional services and can therefore keep its UK costs to a minimum. We have a UK manager and 5 trustees. Environment Africa employs over 100 full time staff across Zimbabwe, Zambia and Malawi.

Key principles

  1. Build coalitions – best way to facilitate change.
  2. People are the key to conservation – the only way to restore, protect, conserve and manage the environment is by working with people, building partnerships and mobilising action. Ethical values and spirituality are essential for sustainability.
  3. Passion for progress – we are not daunted by the challenge! Small steps at a time.
  4. The African Way – African culture is dynamic and can help conservation and tackle poverty, for example traditional rules existed to protect watersheds and forests. These rules can be used to restore balance to natural and social systems.
  5. Crossing Borders – ecosystems do not sit neatly within single countries so we work across borders to safeguard natural resources.
  6. Environmental Champions – peer educators and community role models – we applaud them and rely on them to share skills and knowledge.
